The story behind the photograph

I volunteer occasionally at a wolf sanctuary in Colorado. We have helped establish large open paddocks (fenced with integrity) for these amazing beasts that come here from all scenarios. In exchange for our work, we are able to interact, even pet, and I have even been licked in the face! They are larger than you imagine, and they are not dogs - you feel the wild in their presence. This is sweet Indigo. She passed away the next morning from this photo, laying herself to rest underneath the same tree where her sister passed.”

A black-phase gray wolf stands in dry grass and scattered leaf litter, head turned to its right, one amber eye catching the light. Low sun rakes across the coat, silvering the guard hairs along the shoulder and ruff while the muzzle and flank stay in deep shadow. The background falls away into warm, out-of-focus bands of bleached grass and bare ground.

Why these words

This wolf looks like us, scarred yet alert from the trials of life, yet still standing.

Persevere

The photograph that inspired this piece

Persevere

It begins with an original photograph by Tom Bartel of a real place. This version was developed from that photograph in our studio, using digital and AI tools guided by the original’s own composition, and these words set over the finished picture. How these are made.
