The story behind the photograph

This is just a typical neighborhood scene around Grand County, Colorado. More so, it’s the hill in the view as I look west from my house! I love all the seasons, and Spring and Fall are most fun as the transition creates such great weather patterns in the Mountains… quick rain and snow storms spool up out of nowhere, can last as little as 10 minutes, and you are back to blue sky and sunshine. I love Colorado for this.”

A heavy bank of storm cloud sits over low forested ridges and open grassland, broken at one point where sunlight falls through in a visible shaft. The beam lands on the slope below, lifting a band of pale grass and scattered trees out of the shadow while the rest of the land stays blue and unlit. Light pools again in a second gap at the upper left, suggesting the cloud is thinning across the whole sky.

Why these words

The whole picture is a contest between a heavy bank of storm cloud and the shafts of sun that get through it and land on the fields below the ridge. The verse names exactly that: light that the dark does not close over.

Breakthrough

The photograph that inspired this piece

Breakthrough

It begins with an original photograph by Tom Bartel of a real place. This version was developed from that photograph in our studio, using digital and AI tools guided by the original’s own composition, and these words set over the finished picture. How these are made.
