The story behind the photograph

I live in the Colorado Mountains in Kremmling, Colorado at around 7,300 feet, and I spend a lot of time passing through Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, many times by way of Trail Ridge Road. This is the highest continuous paved road in the United States! All told, it is a 48-mile scenic drive through Rocky Mountain National Park, connecting Estes Park to Grand Lake and crossing the Continental Divide at 12,183 feet. It is a delight when we catch Elk or Moose in these high alpine meadows or swampy ponds.”

A bull elk stands in profile in a flowering summer meadow, head turned back over its shoulder, eyes half closed. Its heavy six-point antlers are clean of velvet, and the dark mane at the throat contrasts with the pale rump patch and the tawny flanks. Diffused overcast light keeps the green grass and scattered yellow blooms saturated, with no hard shadow to break the hillside behind.
