A single chicory stem stands at the left of the frame, one blue ray flower open and the remaining buds still closed and held tight against the stalk. Behind it the sky bands from a low white core of light through orange and yellow into slate-grey cloud, with the ground reduced to an unbroken dark line. The flower is lit only from behind, so its petals read as translucent colour against the burning band of the horizon.
