“The wild still lingered in him, and the wolf in him merely slept.”
A Yellowstone coyote in thick winter coat stands on open snow, head turned to hold the camera's gaze. Low sunlight rakes across the drifts from the left, warming the guard hairs along its flank and back while the surrounding snow falls into cool blue shadow. Behind, snow-laden deadfall and a dark conifer bough sit softly out of focus.
From the artist, Tom Bartel
Touring Yellowstone in the deep winter of early 2026 we found many amazing species... this may be mistaken by many as a wolf, however it is a coyote. In Yellowstone, the wild in the wilderness runs deep. These coyotes have the bodies of wolves you'd see in Colorado or elsewhere... it's the face, the pointed snout, that is the give away. Such still, peaceful, pristine moments of beauty in these encounters. We are blessed.

Developed from an original photograph
It begins with an original photograph by Tom Bartel of a real place. This version was developed from that photograph in our studio, using digital and AI tools guided by the original’s own composition, and these words set over the finished picture. How these are made. The original photograph is sold on its own.
