The story behind the photograph

One summer while camping with Alan and my oldest son AJ, north of Gunnison, Colorado, towards Taylor park. We came back to the campground one afternoon after fishing and I saw this tree off the road and I said, "tomorrow I'm going to shoot that". And I did. First light, I was out and God smiled on that tree, like all things!”

A single aspen caught mid-turn — leaves running from green through gold into deep red — stands lit in a narrow shaft of low sun while the spruce and pine around it hold their shadow. Behind the conifers a shaded mountain slope falls away into cool blue, so the tree reads as the one warm thing in the frame. Smaller aspens at the right edge catch a fainter glow near the forest floor.
