The Hills Rejoice · Psalm 65:12
“They drop upon the pastures of the wilderness: and the little hills rejoice on every side”
In Tom Bartel's words
“A late Spring scene in Grand County, Colorado. I love clouds, they are expressive and bring mood, and to me a reminder of presence.”

Two bay horses graze a high valley pasture in early spring, the grass still patchy between bare cottonwoods and sagebrush, with a snow-covered range rising behind the foothills and a scatter of ranch buildings in the middle distance. Heavy cloud fills the upper half of the frame and holds the peaks in shade, while a break in the overcast lets flat light fall on the near field and pick out the horses' red coats.
Why these words
Sage-covered benchland and low rolling hills run back from the pasture to the snowfields, and the broken cloud is letting light down on them in patches. The verse speaks of the wilderness pastures and rejoicing hills rather than cultivated ground, which is what this country is.

The photograph that inspired this piece
It begins with an original photograph by Tom Bartel of a real place. This version was developed from that photograph in our studio, using digital and AI tools guided by the original’s own composition, and these words set over the finished picture. How these are made.
