Consider the Lilies · Matthew 6:28
“CONSIDER THE LILIES OF THE FIELD, HOW THEY GROW; THEY TOIL NOT, NEITHER DO THEY SPIN”
In Tom Bartel's words
“Sometimes it's just the simple things. Out and about with AJ and and Alan in Gunnison County, ground cover in the fields as we left the truck behind on foot, for the river.”

A stand of purple asters in full bloom, their narrow rays splayed around orange-gold disc florets, with slender stems and wiry foliage threading between them. The light is soft and diffuse, flat enough to hold the violet without bleaching it, and the shallow focus lets the near flowers stay crisp while the rest of the colony dissolves into blurred colour. Dry, faded growth in the background places the bloom late in the season.
Why these words
A dense unplanted stand of wild asters, nobody's garden, every bloom turned up and open without effort. The familiar clause meets the picture's argument about things that are clothed without labour.

The photograph that inspired this piece
It begins with an original photograph by Tom Bartel of a real place. This version was developed from that photograph in our studio, using digital and AI tools guided by the original’s own composition, and these words set over the finished picture. How these are made.
