The story behind the photograph

In Yellowstone National Park, on the west Yellowstone side, staying near Gardiner, Montana, we came upon this Bald Eagle in a unique position, the 50 foot tree, 50 feet below us from the road side, putting us eye-level, which is unusual for a Bald Eagle. Squeeze off some shots before he he exited and this was the most fun shot of them all. A leap of faith!”

A bald eagle drops toward a tangle of bleached, bare branches, wings fully spread and yellow talons already open for the grip. Soft, diffuse light off a pale scree slope behind it keeps the background to a wash of sand and grey, so the dark wing feathers and white tail carry all the contrast in the frame. The bird is caught mid-descent, feet still short of the wood.
