The story behind the photograph

Grand County, Colorado - I spend a lot of time outdoors, fly fishing and photography bring me to beautiful scenes. One winter morning, with bluebird skies, while prepping to hike in for some fishing, this Mountain Bluebird visited me right at my truck, in fact, she was posing for me on my side mirror. She kept flittering all around the truck for 10 minutes or more, not sure if she had a message, she was simply beautiful.”

A male mountain bluebird sits in profile at the lower edge of the frame, feathers puffed against the cold, its dark eye and fine bill sharp against an open field of clear sky. Behind and below, a snow-covered slope falls away into soft blur. Hard winter sunlight rakes across the bird from the right, catching the turquoise crown and breaking the blue of the back into pale, almost metallic highlights.
