The Glory of the Lord · Ezekiel 1:28
“THE APPEARANCE OF THE BRILLIANT LIGHT ALL AROUND HIM WAS LIKE THAT OF A RAINBOW IN A CLOUD ON A RAINY DAY. THIS WAS THE APPEARANCE OF THE LIKENESS OF THE GLORY OF THE LORD. AND WHEN I SAW IT, I FELL FACEDOWN AND HEARD A VOICE SPEAKING.”
In Tom Bartel's words
“I love the view from my home, the wide expanses, up on a hill I have a wide view. Looking south, I often see storms rolling through, obscuring the layers of mountains.”

A broad band of rainbow stands in a curtain of rain over low foothills, with jagged peaks dissolving into grey haze behind. Late light slips under the storm to catch the grassy flank and pale rock outcrops of a conical butte, while the foreground ridges, fields and a line of power poles stay in shadow. The colour is softened and smeared by the falling rain rather than sharply arched.
Why these words
The arc stands exactly where Ezekiel puts it, in the cloud on a day of rain, and the warm break of light along the valley floor carries the same sense of glory seen rather than explained. It takes the rainbow as an appearance of God's presence rather than as a covenant sign, which keeps it clear of the Genesis reading already set aside.

The photograph that inspired this piece
It begins with an original photograph by Tom Bartel of a real place. This version was developed from that photograph in our studio, using digital and AI tools guided by the original’s own composition, and these words set over the finished picture. How these are made.
