The story behind the photograph

Eagles Nest in the Gore Range above Green Mountain Resevoir in Summit County, Colorado. These are "thirteeners" in Colorado, not quite in the 14,000 foot elevation class, any yet rugged and gorgeous, especially with snow and late evening light.”

A snow-streaked mountain ridge rises above dark, unlit foothills, its gullies and rock bands still holding the last warm light of the day. Heavy layered storm cloud presses down from above, leaving only a narrow band of amber sky at the horizon on the left. The contrast is extreme: the forested slopes below have fallen entirely into shadow while the summit snowfields catch a brief gold across the stone.
