The story behind the photograph

When in Alaska I realized how large the vastness was with ocean, mountain ranges etc. It brought the importance of "needing people to live a good life. I like solitude but I stll enjoy social interactions. This setting illustrated the vastness and the island tells me about physical isolation. The blue hues, snow on mountains give a cold desolate feeling.”

Outside harbor of Skagway, Alaska. Late afternoon Skies with clouds started to set in. It was in early July. The island has a lighthouse on it.

Why these words

A handful of white buildings on a bare rock, miles of cold water on every side, is as near an image of the uttermost parts of the sea as a view can give; the broken light coming through the cloud answers the wings of the morning.

"no man is an island"

The photograph that inspired this piece

"no man is an island"

It begins with an original photograph by Scott C Johnson of a real place. This version was developed from that photograph in our studio, using digital and AI tools guided by the original’s own composition, and these words set over the finished picture. How these are made.
