The story behind the photograph

Fall of 2024 I was in Barcelona, Spain, and spent a day touring out to Montserrat. Hiked up to the Saint Michael’s Cross (Creu de Sant Miquel, standing 2,500 feet up, it’s easy to see why ancient pilgrims were spellbound by the view of the Montserrat Monastery tucked into the serrated cliffs. "Montserrat" translates to "serrated mountain" or "jagged mountain" in Catalan, and it makes complete sense when you see it. A truly unforgettable landscape.”

A weathered summit cross, its shaft marked with stickers and scratched graffiti and its centre set with an ironwork rosette, rises from the lower left corner into an unbroken depth of blue. Behind it stand rounded conglomerate pinnacles fringed with scrub, their gullies dark against sunlit stone. Hard high sun rakes the rock from the left and leaves the metal of the cross in flat silhouette, while the sky deepens from pale haze at the ridgeline to near-ultramarine overhead.
