The flag of the United States flying full out from a metal pole against a blue sky banked with cumulus. Sunlight comes from behind the camera, striking the fabric so the red stripes hold their saturation and the white ones carry the shadow of every fold, while the cloud mass to the right stays cool and shaded. The wind is steady enough to pull the fly end into a long ripple.
Why these words
The flag is not hanging slack; it is held open and snapping by moving air, the one thing in the frame that cannot be seen. Liberty borne by an invisible wind is the exact action the picture records.

The photograph that inspired this piece
It begins with an original photograph by Tom Bartel of a real place. This version was developed from that photograph in our studio, using digital and AI tools guided by the original’s own composition, and these words set over the finished picture. How these are made.
