The story behind the photograph

This is just outside Leadville, Colorado, which is at an elevation of 10,152 feet, and is he highest incorporated city in North America. We pass through from time to time for events like Skijoring (horse-pulled skiiers taking jumps down main street), and of course fishing. This is access to a river nearby and as you see, I'm nevery shy about checking out water any time of year. The nearby mountain range includes Colorado’s two tallest peaks, Mount Elbert and Mount Massive”

A river runs dark and open between shelves of snow and a shattered ice edge, cutting through a high valley of rust-red willow thickets and bleached winter grasses. Snow-covered peaks hold the far horizon beneath heavy broken cumulus. The light is flat and cold, cool on the snow and water, warming only where it catches the dry grass along the right bank.
