The story behind the photograph

This prominent, giant American flag flying is in the town of Kremmling, Colorado. It measures 20 feet by 30 feet and sits on private property near the West End Liquor store and is a well-known local landmark. Because of Kremmling's powerful and pervasive winds, maintaining the large display is notoriously difficult and expensive, prompting the town to assist with its maintenance and hold community events like flag retirement and raising ceremonies. I've photographed those for the local paper, and I lust love this flag flying in our town so much I regularly grab shots of it. I thought this was a classic, flowing, flag shot of our Old Glory!”

The flag of the United States flying full out from a metal pole against a blue sky banked with cumulus. Sunlight comes from behind the camera, striking the fabric so the red stripes hold their saturation and the white ones carry the shadow of every fold, while the cloud mass to the right stays cool and shaded. The wind is steady enough to pull the fly end into a long ripple.
