A river runs dark and open between shelves of snow and a shattered ice edge, cutting through a high valley of rust-red willow thickets and bleached winter grasses. Snow-covered peaks hold the far horizon beneath heavy broken cumulus. The light is flat and cold, cool on the snow and water, warming only where it catches the dry grass along the right bank.
Why these words
The river holds open and dark through a bleached winter basin, cutting its channel between snow shelves and dormant willow. A way through hard country is precisely what the frame shows.

The photograph that inspired this piece
It begins with an original photograph by Tom Bartel of a real place. This version was developed from that photograph in our studio, using digital and AI tools guided by the original’s own composition, and these words set over the finished picture. How these are made.
